I used an infrared heater to thaw the sand and rock, dug some out and repeated until I got to the line and voila, it thawed and the water flowed.
Richardson well drilling says there installers normally go 18" to 24" below grade. Fortunately, I left a small tree by the well (my witness).
The easy remedy is EPS insulation and another 6" of fill raising the grade of the area. If that doesn't do it, the hard fix is they pull the pump and relocate the line in the casing (at their expense).
I'm getting mellow in my old age, I'll go the easy route.
Wow, you are getting mellow, :) I would expect you would have them re-doing right to code to prevent future issues. Glad you were able to get the water flowing though with out too much trauma, love and miss you, excited about your blog.

What I'm really looking for is something to document their admission of fault and a commitment to remedy it if it persists as a problem past the 6 year period to discover a material defect (done last week) and the additional 6 years to remedy (countdown commenced with discovery).
